Alicante weekend

we went to alicante, spain a few weekends ago to get away from the winter. it was a nice 15-20 degrees most of the time, and very sunny. it was my first time in spain and i really liked the relaxed atmosphere, people sitting outside everywhere chatting, and the fact that families with children filled the parks at 10pm on a saturday night! a very different place to luxembourg, that's for sure.

the food was very good and i tried some things like paella and churros dipped in chocolate, as well as lots of tapas of course (did you know it was invented in alicante?). the best restaurant was lizarran taberna, where there was a constant stream of fresh 'pintxos' being put out. they were composed of all sorts of tasty morsels on top of a slice of baguette with a toothpick holding it all together. you could take as many as you liked and later pay by the number of toothpicks left on your plate. it was easy to end up with a big stack of toothpicks when the waiter was constantly walking past with trays and trays of sizzling new varieties!

we wandered around the castle and its surrounding a few times, always ending up somewhere new. alicante has a very recognizable skyline with beach, city and a big fortified hill, and that hill is covered in castle ruins, museums, old city walls, terraces and gardens. lazily exploring around there in the warm sun was the best thing i could wish to be doing on a saturday afternoon in the middle of winter!

the city, being not the most famous and to its credit not the most touristy, gave me a very good introduction to the atmosphere of spain and now i'm looking forward to my next visit :)
